Using Barcodes with Microsoft Access and Square POS

For many small businesses a Microsoft Access database makes a lot of sense. Quick and easy to develop, an Access database is great for CRM and basic account functions, and of course stock control. And then Square POS (Point Of Sale) for Retail is a great package for handling transactions ‘in store’ and the combination of hardware and software is a compelling package.

But what if you want something ‘extra’ ? Microsoft Access can provide the extra functionality that is unique to your business, and that Square POS cannot provide.

One area may be stock control. If you have stock in different locations and/or at different stages of production (or being handled differently at different stages) then an Access database can be the perfect way of handling your stock. Ultimately of course the database will feed Square POS as you don’t want to be double entering data.

Add then think about a barcoding function. Where transforming a simple SKU into a barcode and printing onto products, shelves or boxes can be handled easily using Microsoft Access. Yes, Microsoft Access can create and print barcodes!

Barcode scanners will automatically read your barcodes and thus reduce the keying (and therefore mis-keying) of SKU and product locations. And these scanners will work with Square POS for retail.

And for internal stock checks – using a barcode for your SKU and your locations means two points of a scanner and a key press can automate your stock check function.

The result for your business - a barcode based stock system that works internally handling stock, through to customer transactions in-store.
